Road death victim's fiancee gives birth to a baby boy
The fiancee of road victim Omar Sutton has given birth to their son, bringing comfort to his grieving family.
Mr. Sutton, 27, died when his bike collided with a BELCO truck in Paget early on Saturday, May 29.
His fiancee April James had their baby, Jaheem Sutton, in her home state of Alabama, USA, at 5.43 p.m on Wednesday.
Jaheem weighed in at 6 lbs and 8oz, and looks just like his father.
"We're both doing well. I feel good, and I feel like I can look in Omar's eyes again," said Ms James, 25. "Jaheem has his eyes and his eyebrows. Omar would be super-excited, he would have been here for the birth."
Paying tribute to her fiancee in the immediate aftermath of his death, Ms James told The Royal Gazette: "I would like everyone to know that Omar was one of the most remarkable, sweet, and loving persons that I have ever met and we were deeply in love with each other. He was a great father and husband-to-be."
Mr. Sutton nicknamed Oats and Iced Out bought an airline ticket the day before his death to visit Ms James, who he met while on holiday in the US. She now plans to visit Bermuda so his friends and family can meet his new son.
Mr. Sutton's best friend, Makai Dickerson, 28, is godfather to Jaheem and his elder sons Jahsiy, seven, and Raheem, five. "Oats would have been ecstatic, he was really looking forward to this," he said. "Jaheem looks just like him, it's like he came again in a way. I'm excited he's my godson. "
Mr. Sutton picked the name Jaheem before he died it's made up out of the names of his two elder sons. Their mother, ChaQuilla Burgess, said they are excited to have a new half-brother.
"I know Omar would have been excited, definitely, and I'm excited because Jaheem was born on my birthday and that gives me comfort as well," she explained.
"All his children look like him and I guess that brings everybody comfort that they can at least see him every day through his children."
Mr. Dickerson added: "Omar was a real father, he loved all of his sons. He always talked about how excited he was that he was going to have another son.
"I love those boys and I could never be a father to them like he was, because he was great with them, but I will always do my best to be there for them in every way and teach them all about him."
Mr. Sutton worked as a salesman at Island Engineering Ltd in Southampton, and was the eldest of three brothers.
His mother, Kathy Sutton, plans to fly out to visit Jaheem at the end of the month.
She said: "Since losing Omar it's been very hard. I've had sleepless nights and I just find myself crying now and then. I've been doing some praying and it's helping me, and my family have been there for me. Having Jaheem means a lot to me. Just looking at photographs of him makes me feel better."
