Relegation-threatened Parish pull off surprise
Boulevard 1 Hamilton Parish 2
Hamilton Parish may be languishing at the bottom of the Premier Division but they showed that it might still be premature to label them as relegation certainties after this surprise victory over middle-of-the-table Boulevard at BAA yesterday.
Goals in each half by Tareek Webb and Jamie Smith gave the Hot Peppers hope that they can still pull off a miracle escape but Boulevard didn't help themselves, having been reduced to 10 men after just 26 minutes when Ajani Gibbons was sent off by referee Alton Reid for head-butting Ryan Richardson.
Blazers played with renewed energy afterwards, pulling back a goal through Angelo Simmons after falling behind 2-0 late in the second half and could have snatched a point after taking a decisive edge after the interval.
But they were shocked early on when Webb turned superbly with his head from a free kick to put Parish ahead 1-0.
Boulevard, however, remained unfazed and matched their opponents for much of the time.
Coming into the game with more momentum, Boulevard were handicapped when Gibbons was dismissed for his rash behaviour, but the Parish defence – marshalled well by centre-backs Calvin Hansey and Robert Somner – held firm and helped stop Boulevard's advances outside of the penalty box.
Boulevard came out with all guns blazing when play re-started but they were to find Parish goalkeeper Nigel Burgess again in brilliant form.
Showing all of his agility, he made two brilliant point-blank saves after 58 minutes, stopping both shots during a goalmouth scramble.
Boulevard were again denied after 65 minutes when Raymond Burgess got hold of a cross from Aaron Nelson but Burgess scooped his shot wide and high of goal from just seven yards.
Parish regained some composure and during an isolated counter attack after 68 minutes Angelo Cannonier raced through the middle only to see Jahleel Crockwell in the Boulevard goal quickly advance to block the tall striker's shot.
Parish slowly stepped up their game and Jamie Smith netted after 72 minutes only to be ruled offside. However, eight minutes later hard-working midfielder Chris Caisey combined with Romone Smith and Jamie Smith with the latter scoring from 16 yards for Parish to go 2-0 up.
Boulevard reduced the arrears after 84 minutes when Simmons coolly dribbled by three defenders before firing into the net.
The home side pressed for an equaliser and came close on two occasions but their forwards hurried shots wide as they were contained by an alert Parish defence.
