Returning Rangers bank on unity

carrying the Friendship Trophy with them into the lower depths after pulling off a shocking 1-0 victory over then league champions PHC in the final.

This time they will be looking to cause further tremors throughout the league and not only survive, but flourish in the top flight.

It may take some doing, with midfield general and second leading goal-scorer, Corey Simmons, currently in school abroad, along with Janeiro Tucker and no real impact players among the squad.

While first team goalkeeper Lynn Tucker departed during the off-season he was rapidly replaced by Randy Darrell, a one-time fixture at the heart of the Southampton defence.

Other additions include striker Shawn Simons and midfielder Jason Raynor, both formerly of PHC, as well as Mark DeMoura, another forward.

Sports committee chairman Randy Raynor explained that no position was safe as players have shown renewed dedication in training as they prepare for the task that lies ahead.

"Our emphasis so far has been on fitness and we've had Anthony Stoneham, who just transferred back to us, taking them through their paces,'' said Raynor.

"We're looking for positive things from all of our players and the key will be for them to play with good team spirit and harmony and maintain unity both on and off the field.

"This year the competition for places is so fierce that even (regulars) like Lamar Seymour and Donald hall are having to battle for places.'' The Southampton club will be coached by Kenny Burt, with assistance from Wendell Simmons, and can be expected to play out of a 4-3-3 system utilising short passing, but trying to stretch their opponents and spread the field.

Raynor added that their main strength is in defence, where Ryan Belboda and Pernell Brangman return as the senior statesmen, and it would be up to the forwards to break the trend that has held true over the years at the club ...

an ineptness around goal.

It has also been somewhat of a tradition for Rangers to struggle near the foot of the table and late in the season pull off a Houdini act to stay up.

Early indications are that they will again have to fight for survival and tomorrow they get their first taste of action against St. George's, who barely avoided the drop last year.

However, Raynor would not dwell on the negative, saying: "It's great to be back!'' 1992-93 accomplishments: Runners-up in Second Division Notable transfers: In -- Shawn Simons, Randy Darrell, Mark DeMoura, Jason Raynor Out -- Lynn Tucker.
