Shuntae Hendrickson and Dage Minors won their first Senior School Girls and Boys’ championships after staging comebacks in their mile races last night. Hendrickson, who was faster than last year’s winner, outpaced Kyrah Scraders and Jordan Bascome as she crossed the finish line in a time of five minutes, 43 seconds .The pace was quick at the beginning with the trio, along with Megan Berry, keeping one another within touching distance. It was the Berkeley Institute student, however, who kept her cool to pull away in the dying stages.Admitting that the conditions were less than ideal, the newly crowned champion said was pleased with the race and the result.“It was hard because of the rain and different weather conditions, it affected my legs to a degree but I wanted to win bad so I’m pleased with the race,” said Hendrickson.“I was going out to do my best and hope for the best, I have trained hard for this and it paid off.”Scraders (5:45.8) followed Hendrickon to the line while Bascome clocked six minutes, 13.6 seconds. In the High School Boys’ race, Minors outduelled last year’s runner-up Juma Mouchette, crossing the line in 4:34.6.Mouchette (4:35.8) and Nico Barclay (5:07.6) were second and third respectively.Minors praised Mouchette for setting a fast pace early on in their battle for supremacy.“It was a hard run and I have to tip my hat to Juma for taking it out so fast. I didn’t think he would but it came down to who wanted it more and in the end I prevailed,” said Minors.“The conditions didn’t help, the cross winds and so forth but I felt I was better equipped having been away for a little while, so I am thankful that we got to race and was involved in a race like this one.“I have won the race before but this year I am a senior and it is pleasing to get the win.”Warwick Academy’s David Darrell won the Middle School Boys race, leading from start to finish in a time of five minutes, 26.5 seconds.Second place went to Michaiah Robinson (5:29.3) while Aaron Jacobs (5:40.3) rounded out the top three. In the Middle School Girls race, Sandys student Zakiyyah Showers won in five minutes, 48.1, seven seconds ahead of Quaashie Douglas (5:55.2) of Whitney Institute.Quinnae Outerbridge (6:05.8) of BHS completed the podium positions.Sajan Harvey of Warwick Academy (5:47.6) won the Primary School Boys race in comfortable fashion, holding off Ryan Outerbridge (5:57.4) of St David’s Primary and Julan Hassell (5:59.0) of St David’s Primary.Saltus’ Ashley Irby (5:54.7) had the biggest win of the night, charging home more that 14 seconds ahead of the second placed finisher.Mikaela Outerbridge (6:08.1) of St David’s Primary and Emma Harvey (6:09.4) completed the top three.
