Seamer Bell returns for Cleveland

Janeiro Tucker of Southampton Rangers and Lionel Cann of Warwick were named the Logic Players of the Week for their performances last weekend in the Premier and First Divisions.

Challengers Cleveland County will be boosted by the return of medium pacer Damali Bell for Saturday’s Eastern Counties final against holders Bailey’s Bay.The youngster is in school abroad and has missed the entire season but Cleveland coach Allan Douglas confirmed Bell is set to return today to play in Saturday’s final match of the series. Bell made his debut in the competition against Flatts in 2010 when Cleveland were the champions, taking four wickets for 40 runs from 14 overs. It proved to be his ‘breakout’ performance as soon after the national selectors began taking notice and last year Bell made his debut for St. George’s in Cup Match.Cleveland have not enjoyed the best of seasons in the Logic Premier Division, losing to Southampton Rangers on Sunday to finish second-last and face a playoff match against the second-placed team in the First Division to determine which team will play in the top flight next season. However, the counties will be an opportunity for the community to salvage some pride, though the task of beating Bailey’s Bay will be a daunting one as Flatts and St. David’s have already discovered.“They have been playing good cricket all season so there is no taking anything from them and what they have been doing,” said Douglas. “But they say cricket is a funny game of glorious uncertainties and it is a matter of who the luck goes with, I think. I can’t say we’re going to do this, that and the other, it’s going to be tough, tough, tough.“On paper we have a decent team but we weren’t able to bowl people out,” explained Douglas of the team’s predicament this season. “That’s been our problem all year, but it is a combination of a whole lot of things.”Cleveland will announce their team tonight and are expected to include the likes of Hasan Durham, Mishael Paynter and Dion Stovell to boost their squad. Bay are expected to recall veteran batsman Irving Romaine who has not played in the Eastern Counties this season.Bay have been the most consistent team this season and have been rewarded for the hard work by winning the Premier Division, Belco Cup and T20 title and are now looking to cap off their season by holding onto the Eastern Counties Cup they took from Cleveland last season when they beat them by four wickets in the first round. This year they drew with Flatts in the first round after Flatts posted 294, then easily beat St. David’s by seven wickets in the second round two weeks ago.n Veteran players Janeiro Tucker of Southampton Rangers and Lionel Cann of Warwick were named the Logic Players of the Week for their performances last weekend in the Premier and First Divisions.Tucker scored 104 not out off 89 balls from seven fours and nine sixes and then claimed two wickets for 15 runs from 5.3 overs as Rangers defeated Cleveland in a crucial Premier Division match while Cann was voted Logic First Division Player of the Week after scoring 73 runs off 52 balls with six fours and four sixes. He also claimed three wickets for 44 runs against Somerset Bridge on Sunday.
