A teenage motorcyclist was killed in a road accident yesterday - on his 19th birthday.

The Warwick man became the Island's 14th road fatality of 2008 however Police were unable to disclose his name until family members had been notified, though is understood the deceased was the son of a Policeman

Officers reported that around 3 p.m. the 19-year-old was on a motorcycle travelling west along Warwick Lane in Warwick, when he collided with a tan Hyundai SUV coming from the opposite direction.

The teenager was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is understood the driver of the car was not injured.

One eye witness, Doctor Tait was driving a van in the same direction of the motorcycle at the time of the accident. The owner of DTConstruction said he was travelling along WarwickLane towards Spice Hill Road when he saw the motorcyclist coming up behind him. He said: "I was about to turn over the hill, but I saw this guy in the mirror and instead of me turning, Ikept driving in case he was about to overtake me.

"There was one (a car) on the other side of the road and he tried to go between me and the other. "

The vehicles collided. Mr. Tait said he stopped his van and immediately got out to try and help.

He added: "I held on to him saying, 'Stay with me', and I called 911. The driver of the car was flipping out and was walking up and down the road.

"A gentleman came out of the pink house with a bottle of water and a man in a (second car) said he was an EMT. He held the guy and was clearing (his) airway and a few minutes after, the ambulance came. It happened like that. (In) like seconds.

"The last road fatality on the Island was in September when 40-year-old Tennison Fernando, a native of Sri Lanka, lost control of his bike and fell into the opposite traffic lane. He died after he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Just last week, Remembering Our Love Ones (ROLO), held a candlelit vigil during which they delivered a roll call of the names of persons dead from road fatalities over the past 20 years.

A resident who does not wish to be named but lives near where the 19-year-old man lost his life yesterday was still shaken-up when he spoke to The Royal Gazette.

He said:"I just heard a series of brakes and literally it was (such a noise that) I didn't even want to go outside.

"It sounded like an accident you wouldn't want to be a part of. After the breaks I heard a collision and one guy was yelling expletives, I imagine out of shock."I knew it had to be bad and I thought it looked bad (but) when they got him on the gurney it seemed like there might be a chance. "It was one of those things I just wish I didn't have to see. I don't think I even want to use my bike anymore. It looked to me like everyone (at the scene) was shocked. Our hearts go out to the family. It's just such a sad thing."
