Showbizz auction falls short of creditor hopes by $51,500
An auction of Showbizz Pub and Restaurant assets yesterday raised about $11,500, but fell significantly short of the $63,000 sought by creditors.
Doors to the business were locked October 4 by the deputy provost marshal in a dispute over $40,000 worth of rent owed to the building landlords.
Writs were filed earlier this year with the Supreme Court by landlords Mr.
Walter and Mrs. E.M. Lovette Brangman for $19,140, and by Mr. Donald Hassell for $16,785.65. Three writs were filed with Magistrates Court for $12,000, $13,800 and $1,200 by the Ministry of Finance.
About $700 in cash was seized from the premises when the pub was closed and was included in the estimated $11,500 raised for creditors. All items in the auction yesterday were sold.
Showbizz owner Mr. David "Tinny'' McCann said earlier this month that he was trying to sell the business but, according to Deputy Provost Marshal Mr.
Sheldon E. Fox, "clearly in this case things did not get sorted out, that's why there was a sale.'' Showbizz operated at its Hamilton location since December 3, 1992 and two weeks prior to closing, the business obtained a nightclub licence allowing it to remain open to 3 a.m.
LOCKED UP -- Showbizz Pub and Restaurant with its 1960s era theme is closed for good. Contents were auctioned off on Wednesday but fell short of creditors' hopes.
