M3 Wireless wants to build a new 90-foot cell tower only feet from its current one in Smith's.

According to chief operating officer Michael Beckles, the company needed to renovate the telecommunications tower that is already located at the Zuill's Park, Wilderness Lane, Smith's property.

However, once the company calculated how much it would cost both in repairs and downtime for their customers, it decided to build a new tower before tearing down the existing one.

He said: "We already have a tower there. It's just that it needs to be maintained and renovated.

"But when we look at the cost of the renovation, as well as the cost to our clients it was too high.

"Normally we would renovate the tower but logistically it didn't make sense. It's almost like repairing your motorcar while driving."

Mr. Beckles said there would be little change – the tower will be about the same height as the current one of 90 feet, and on the same property but at a slightly higher elevation.

M3 Wireless submitted their application to the Department of Planning on October 31 and it was advertised in the Bermuda Sun on Friday.

Objections to the plan can be submitted to the department by November 21.

Mr. Beckles added: "The downtime for our customers will be one day to half a day this way.

"More than one day is unacceptable and by going through Planning we are going through the proper processes."
