Scholarship honouring Dr. Barbara Ball launched

Government has established a Public Health Scholarship in honour of Dr. Barbara Ball (centre) who broke the racial barriers by caring for patients of all races and classes without refusing treatment for those who could not afford it. According to colleague Helena Molly Burgess (centre right), Dr. Ball at one time had the "Biggest practice and the least money" of all the doctors in Bermuda. Standing with Dr. Ball are (LtoR) Eugene Blakeney, Ottiwell Simmons, BIU President Chris Furbert, Minister of Health Nelson Bascome, Helena Molly Burgess and Colin Simmons.

Applications are now being accepted for a new public health scholarship named in honour of a legendary union activist.

The Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarship is aimed at Bermudians studying nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, maternal care, dental hygiene, dentistry, psychiatry, drug counselling, social work, occupational safety and health, environmental health and medical studies.

Application forms can be picked up at the Ministry of Health headquarters, the Cabinet Office and the Bermuda Industrial Union. It can also be downloaded at www.gov.bm.

Health Permanent Secretary Warren Jones said those applying had to be a resident of Bermuda and possess Bermuda status or be the dependent of a Bermudian.

They must also have been accepted for admission on an approved programme of study in an accredited institution and have achieved the minimum academic requirements for their programme of study if in an existing programme.

"We are very excited to provide the opportunity for Bermudians to pursue or enhance their careers in public health," he said. "This is an area of need within our community and the Dr. Ball scholarship will assist us to meet that need. We are looking forward to identifying the first recipients of this award in June."

The $150,000 annual scholarship will be divided among successful applicants. The deadline for submitting applications is 5 p.m. on May 20.
