Flanagan’s Onions opened up an eight-point gap in the race for the second and final promotion spot after seeing their closest rivals lose in the latest round of matches.Onions beat Young Men’s Social Club on Saturday night 5-3 to apply pressure to the fellow promotion chasers, and with BAA having lost the previous night 4-2 to leaders Wolves, their destiny is in their own hands.A brace from Kevin Ronaldson and single strikes from Phil Matthews, Pete Robey and Darren Doolin were enough to earn Onions their win, while Robert Rawlins, Callon Burns and Robert Somner scored for Social Club.X’Roads had a bye and are currently on 29 points, while Onions will have the opportunity to watch and see everyone’s results this coming weekend as they are not in action.Despite their healthy lead over BAA, coach Mick Ward isn’t ready to pop the champagne just yet.“The top teams all have to play each other in the run-in to the end of the season, and there are still a few big games to come,” said Ward. “We’re closer to it now but we ain’t home and dry just yet.“The next round of league games we will have a bye week, so it will be interesting to see how the teams around us use that game in hand.”Wolves came from two goals down in their clash with BAA last Friday night, with Ian Simmons scoring twice, his first in the opening two minutes of play.John Barry Nusum pulled a goal back for Wolves, before Antoine Brangman levelled just before the break.Striker Derrick Brangman and Sergio Richardson then both scored to put the hosts into the lead, a position they wouldn’t surrender.Marcel Dill scored for Hamilton Parish as they beat Prospect 1-0.Somerset Eagles needed all six of their goals to get past Devonshire Colts 6-5, with Tristan Smith and Darin Dowling both scoring twice. Lakaim Lowe and Kyle Williams also added single strikes to help the cause.Giovanni Saltus scored twice, while Enrique Wilkins, Lozendro Symonds, Terry Foote each scored a goal in the defeat.The two bottom clubs, Ireland Rangers and Paget, drew 3-3 to share the spoils.Jerome Codrington, an own goal and Jessie Mills, had Rangers in the lead twice and looking to grab all three points before Danzil Smith grabbed a late equaliser for the visitors.Edison Clarke and Rakyi Emory also scored for Paget.
