Onions target promotion push
Flanagan’s Onions coach Mick Ward isn’t surprised with his team’s position in the First Division standings and believes a promotion spot is with his side’s reach.Flanagan’s currently sit third in the table, two points behind second place X’Roads and five behind leaders Wolves.Having a game in hand which they will play tonight against Prospect at Devonshire Rec, a win would see them climb to second place, something that wouldn’t surprise Ward.“Last year we were near the top of the table around this time of the season, and we tapered off towards the end,” said Ward.“This season we have drafted in some players of good quality, and I think the squad is better and stronger than before, probably as good as I’ve seen.“We thought we might be able to get promoted last year, but it wasn’t to be.“With the squad we currently have, I’m sure we’ll be pushing harder for it this season.“We all believe we can go on and get promoted, but there is still plenty of work to do before the end of the season. There are still maybe three or four teams chasing those promotion spots, but if we can grab hold of one, then it is up to us to still be holding on to it by the end of March.“The season has been good so far but we’re not getting carried away.“We had a bit of a bad spell in the middle of the first half of the season when we were low on squad numbers and only picked up one point from three games and we were disappointed to have not done better in the Shield Cup, but given the players we have it is always difficult to get a full squad over the Christmas holidays as so many of our players are off Island.“We’re looking at the next game, and we’ll do our best to come away with the three points tonight.”Onions continued their pursuit of overhauling X’Roads over the weekend, beating Devonshire Colts 1-0, courtesy of Phil Matthews.X’Roads, meanwhile, made sure they weren’t giving up their spot, beating Ireland Rangers 4-1Marvin Belboda, Kao Astwood, and Daniel Baker hit the net for the winners, while Ryan scored for Rangers.Shaki Swan grabbed a brace, while Dennis Joell and Kijuan Saltus scored single strikes as Prospect beat Paget 4-0.League leaders Wolves beat Young Men’s Social Club 2-0, thanks to goals from Sergio Richardson and Marcus Ming.
