PLP plan memorial for former leader Wade
A permanent memorial will be unveiled to mark the life of late Progressive Labour Party leader L. Frederick Wade, Premier Alex Scott revealed last night.
Cabinet approval has already been given for the tribute to Mr. Wade, who died ten years ago on Sunday at the age of 57.
Mr. Scott made the announcement during a public forum to mark the anniversary last night, explaining that the plan is to ?affix his name to an establishment? that will be earmarked after consultation.
?Over the next weeks and months we want to hear Bermuda speak with one voice about one individual who demonstrated fortitude, character, loyalty, commitment and a national spirit before we even thought of ourselves as a nation,? added Mr. Scott.
Around 70 people including prominent PLP members and the late Mr. Wade?s family gathered for the forum at the Leopard?s Club in Hamilton, including Dame Jennifer Smith and Dame Lois Browne-Evans.
PLP backbencher and MC for the event Nelson Bascome described Mr. Wade as ?an amazing man? and ?one who led the PLP into the 21st century with vision and vigour.?
Finance Minister Paula Cox described him as: ?A man who left a legacy for the PLP; a foundation for us to build on. A man who gave of himself and had a passion for Bermuda and its people.?
The audience also watched a video showing key speeches and events during Mr. Wade?s leadership.
Several further memorial events are planned for this weekend. Tonight, a cocktail reception and exhibition will be held at the PLP?s Alaska Hall headquarters in Court Street, Hamilton. The event, between 6pm and 8pm, will be open to the public.
On Sunday, a morning worship service will take place at 11 a.m. at St. Paul AME Church Court Street.
