Bermuda roof in the spotlight
LOCAL architecture will be celebrated in a series of events marking Bermuda Roof Week, which kicks off tomorrow.
Imagine Bermuda 2009, a group set up to promote Bermuda's heritage, has organised the tribute in conjunction with the Bermuda National Trust.
Co-chairman Glenn Fubler said a shared national heritage would help the community come together as it gears up for the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Bermuda in 2009.
"The Bermuda roof is an icon of our small island home," Mr. Fubler said.
"It demonstrates a heritage of resourcefulness passed on by those on whose shoulders we stand, as the traditional structure used all local materials.
"The roof speaks to the tradition of being proactive in meeting the many challenges of living in one of the most isolated locales in the world ? protecting us and supplying water. The beauty of its architecture reflects our appreciation for living in harmony with our surroundings."
A family quiz on the history of the Bermuda roof will be held at a number of stores ? Gorham's, S.A.L. and Bermuda Paint ? tomorrow, with $250 gift vouchers as prizes.
There will be a presentation by former Government archivist John Adams on the contributions of masons, carpenters and quarrymen at the National Gallery on Monday at 5.30 p.m. while historian Edward Harris will give a lecture at the Lime Kiln at Hog Bay Park, Sandys, at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Mr. Fubler added: "As an icon, the Bermuda roof is symbolic of the fact that, in spite of any differences amongst us, the residents of our island are all protected by this distinctive structure.
"The issue of affordable housing reminds us of the balance between challenge and opportunity. Thousands of visitors are welcomed annually to appreciate our hospitality under the Bermuda roof. This icon, bonding together numerous fragile slates into a structure of substantial strength, is a metaphor showing the way towards strong community.
"We encourage the island's faith communities to include an observance of appreciation for the Bermuda roof and those who have handed us this inheritance. We are inviting families to spend some time this week to do the same in some way in their homes."
