Rugby teams clash in silverware chase semi-finals
The local rugby season winds towards a close with the Nichol Shield and Scully Cup semi-finals being held at National Sports Centre this Sunday. The opening matches see Teachers take on Mariners.
Teachers have had their share of injuries this season which eventually took its toll and stymied their challenge for the league title.
Injured West Indies star Bobby Hurdle and Thomas Greenslade are doubtful for the knock-out game. Wily captain Dave Porter will have to inspire his depleted team if they are to match the intensity and commitment the Greens have shown of late.
Meanwhile Mariners have had a very successfully season, due in no small part to the outstanding coaching of Johann Oosthuizen and are in the bizarre position of holding all of this season’s local rugby silverware except the league title (and of course the Nichol Shield), including the ignoble Wooden Spoon for coming last in the league.
Mariners’ forwards lead by Gary Brady and Kris Furbert will be looking to set a dominating platform from which their backs can attack. Richard Holden’s kicking form has been deadly and the Reds will have to play disciplined rugby if they do not wish to give easy points away.
In the second match Police will be taking on all-conquering Renegades. Renegades have by far the most explosive offence on the island with a stunning 218 points scored so far this year.
The mercurial duo of Tom Healy and Paul Waldburger have proven far too hot to handle and have rarely been shut down.
Police will be missing their hardy war horse Dave Bird and will rely heavily on national team veterans Matt Smith and Mark Evans to give them some power up front.
In the back speedsters Ralshon Douglas and Adam Farrell will have their hands full shutting down the vaunted Renegades wingers.
Renegades will be buoyed by the presence of veteran back row player Rod Stewart who will only strengthen an already formidable pack. Both games promise to be a good showcase for local men’s rugby.
In women’s Robin Hood Scully Cup action Teachers take on Mariners in a game in which both sides must believe they have a chance to go through.
Teachers have been racked with injuries and have only recently got back to their impressive early season form. Mariners have steadily improved and have depth in strength.
Meanwhile league champions Renegades will be taking on a dangerous Police squad who have no reason to be in awe. Police have the talent
