Second seed Bascome too strong for Whitter
Number two seed Jenson Bascome prevailed over flamboyant lefty Jovan Whitter in an entertaining encounter at the annual Argus Open on Monday
Bascome started the first set in a commanding fashion, hitting strong forehands down the line and closing in on the net. His variety of shots forced Whitter into a number of errors with Bascome taking the match 6-4, 6-3.
Another lefty, Men's 'A' Singles number four seed Gavin Manders, was solid throughout his convincing win over number five seed Chase Toogood, 6-0, 6-2. Toogood was outpaced and taken wide too often, allowing Manders to take the win.
Romar Douglas had to dig deep to come back after a first-set deficit of 5-7 against Silvain Girard.
Girard gave big server Douglas a scare but it was the latter who prevailed, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Over the weekend an intriguing match resulted in an unexpected score as number two Ladies' A Singles seed Sasha Fisher defeated Jackie Lambert in a seesaw match. Lambert took the first set 6-0 then Fisher, seemingly waking up, raised her game to take the second set 6-4 and the final set with a definitive 6-0 score.
Also in the Ladies' A division top seed Ashley Brooks defeated the up and coming, unseeded Carolita Joseph, 6-4, 6-1, a respectable score for a youngster who is projected to make some headway in open tournaments in years to come.
In Men's B Singles, Larry Samuels defeated Leslie Stowe 6-4, 6-2 and then finished off Dennis Harris in a marathon – 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
In Men's A Doubles action, top seeds Andy Bray and James Collieson were pushed by Chris Watson and David Jenkins, eventually winning 7-5, 6-0.
