In the men's Second Division, top seed Rick Bartlett was leading in his quarter-final match against Michael Swain but was forced to retire with a knee injury. Swain now meets Tim Grice, a 9-4, 9-1, 9-5 winner over Mike Scutts, in the semi-finals tonight.
The other semi-final sees Andy McDougall, a 9-6, 7-9, 9-7, 9-7 winner over Steven Young, going against Marco Bortoli, who eliminated Ken McClure 9-7, 9-2, 9-7.
In the men's Third Division quarter-finals, Viv Redford, Fletcher Cocquyt, Naz Jetha and Kirby Smith all advanced into tonight's semis.
SOCCER SOC Despite missing 12 players from last year's squad, St. George's picked up their first win over Somerset in the fourth annual Old Boys Classic.
The east enders, who lost the first two matches before last year's encounter was drawn, looked headed to another defeat against the former Somerset Trojans when Keith Simmons gave the home team a 1-0 lead at the half. However, late goals in the second half turned the match around as Arthur (Bubba) Tucker, Earl Smith and Noel (Sub) Smith scored.
Somerset fielded a strong team with the likes of Keith and Donnie Simmons, Richard Simmons, Lionel (Baldy) Smith, Larry Smith, George Brangman and Jerry Lynn Simons and 'keeper Philip (Stickman) Galloway.
St. George's were made up of the likes of Russell Knights, Cal Brown, Gregory (Brutus) Foggo, Gary Darrell, Mike Whalley, Eugene Wainwright and David Brangman in goal.
Six persons were honoured for their contributions to the sport: The late Erskine Brangman and Conrad Simons of Somerset and Cal Brown and Ritchie (Bunny) Foggo of St. George's, as well as former referee Glynn Gilbert and Royal Gazette sports reporter Colin Zuill.
TABLE TENNIS PP Old Colony Club retained their Bank of Butterfield League title on Tuesday by three games following a 9-2 victory over Young Men's Social Club.
The teams finished level on 34 points with 17-1 records but Prison Officers settled for the runners-up spot, despite winning 11 games on Tuesday when Bermuda College didn't show and defaulted their match.
OCC won 164 games and lost just 34; Officers ended up with a 161-37 mark.
The defending champions took control of the league last month when they beat Prison Officers 9-2. Officers squeezed by The Centre in a make-up match and walloped BPSA I 8-3 in round 16 to catch up with OCC on 30 points, but were still six games in arrears with only two rounds left.
OCC now go for the second part of the double next Tuesday night when they meet Social Club in the Challenge Cup finals at 7.30 p.m.
