Dream comes true for oarsmen

It started with a lunch-time meeting in May 2003, it has turned into the Bermuda Rowing Association, and who knows where it could lead in the future?

Sports Minister Dale Butler was guest of honour at the official launch of the new BRA at a Special General Meeting.

The association was the brainchild of Ernest Horvath, whose son was national championship in the European country, and Michael Swain who shared their dream of one day forming an association of rowers in Bermuda.

"I have been rowing for many years in my native Switzerland and wanted to share the thrill of the sport with my friends in Bermuda," Horvath told The Royal Gazette.

"It was by a happy coincidence that I was introduced to Michael Swain and I soon realised that we shared the same passion for our sport."

The pair soon started making contact with fellow rowers and were amazed at how many there were in Bermuda with top of everybody's 'you must talk to' list was Jim Butterfield ? who rowed for Bermuda in the Munich Olympics in 1972.

"Since starting to row at the age of eleven I have appreciated what it takes to reach the top of this sport ? well, nearly the top!" said Swain.

"I want to introduce those values to Bermuda youth. It is often commented that there is not enough to do in Bermuda; well, we are here to increase the number of healthy choices.

"I am delighted that Jim has accepted a position as director. We can learn so much from his experience and energy."

Butler made a special effort to attend the formation meeting last Thursday ? and even joined himself. He was among 28 other oarsmen and women who joined that night.

"I know the Minister is a keen runner and occasional pugilist so we were especially pleased that Mr. Butler is joining us in reinforcing Bermuda's maritime heritage," added Swain.
