Basden blast floors Wolves
A superb goal by Vasco forward Dwight Basden after 75 minutes sent high flying Wolves plunging to their first loss of the season in this Coca Cola First Division match at BAA Field last night.
It was a beautiful solo effort by Basden that floored Wolves. With supreme coolness, he got past centre-back Leonard Hypolite and full-back Tauranno Trott before dribbling into the area and sending an unstoppable angled shot past goalkeeper Hewvonnie Brown.
That goal enabled triple crown champions Vasco to come away with the points they deserved in a match that saw them dominate the first half only to lose their touch and allow their opponents to grab a greater share of the play in the second.
Wolves, who could have become sole holders of first place with a share of the points, proved again that they will be competitive in the top flight this season. But their fans should not expect too much.
As it was Wolves were fortunate to finish the first 45 minutes scoreless with Brown being responsible for locking out a rampaging Vasco attack led by Basden and Ascento Russell.
Brown was called into action after just seven minutes when he pushed away a 16-yard blast from Sinclair Gibbons.
And after 26 minutes Russell watched in agony as his rocket from 19 yards hit the post and was eventually pushed outside for a corner.
After 35 minutes Basden got by a defender only to see his angled shot from 15 yards pushed around the woodwork by the agile Brown.
With veteran Dion Wainwright surprisingly being given a lot of room in which to roam in midfield, Wolves were always able to counter attack and from two build-ups that led to free kicks outside the box they put shots just over the bar.
Nakia Smith sent one such effort over the top from 25 yards after 38 minutes and Keemo Smith put his shot wide of the post after 44 minutes.
Play became more competitive after the break with Vasco, clearly limited in midfield where Otis Steede got little support, seldom able to dominate as they had in the first half.
Basden, however, finally settled their nerves after 75 minutes with a goal which forced Wolves to play with more urgency. But the newcomers to the First Division just didn't have the firepower to expose any weakness in the champions' defence.

St. David's 1 Prospect 0 A goal three minutes from time by Chae Simmons gave the east enders both points from this Second Division match at BAA last night.
Simmons had been causing problems for Prospect all night with his turn of speed down the left flank and it came as no surprise when he settled the issue with his goal after 87 minutes.
Earlier in the second half he and Lionel Cann had put shots high over the goal from just inside the box.
Prospect missed a chance to go ahead after 80 minutes when Phillip Bailey saw his blast from 18 yards brilliantly pushed wide by Sidney Minors in the St.
David's goal.
