There will be a lot of stories told and many fun times recalled when a group of former Castle Harbour Hotel co-workers hold a 50-year reunion in Bermuda this summer.About 30 people from overseas will fly or sail to Bermuda aboard the Veendam in August for a four-day visit which will see them visiting the former hotel property, now the Rosewood Tucker’s Point, touring the Island and catching up with several other colleagues still living here. Most of them worked in food service at the hotel.Austria-born Hannes Broschek, who met his wife Emmy while working at the hotel in 1962, has some fond memories of Bermuda and the hotel where he made many long-lasting friends.The group had a reunion in Ottawa in 2007 which was attended by 30 people, but the upcoming reunion has special significance as it is where most of them started their careers in the hotel industry.“For some of us it was over 50 years ago when we arrived in Bermuda,” said Mr Broschek from his home in Ottawa, Canada.He first came to Bermuda in 1960 and worked at Mid Ocean Club before joining Castle Harbour in September 1962, where he met his wife Emma who is also Austrian.She worked on the front desk, then as a barmaid and later in the office.They returned briefly to Austria before coming back to Bermuda in March 1964 when they married and stayed until November 1968 before moving to Canada.The couple’s son Christopher was born in Bermuda in 1968 and was married here in September 2010 aboard the yacht Venetian.“As a group we still feel and know we had the best time of our life in Bermuda and it is so neat to see everybody again,” said Mr Broschek, who turns 73 this year.“Looking at the pictures we were young, we were skinny, we looked good, now we are old. We have kept quite a good contact, we have 36 or 38 people from Castle Harbour.“It will be five years in August since the reunion in Ottawa so we said let’s do one more in Bermuda. We are really looking forward to seeing all these people. One guy, Rudi Fischer, goes to Bermuda every year.”Many members of the group have returned to Bermuda over the years but there is still much they want to see and do when they return, things they used to do like visit restaurants, beaches and shopping in Hamilton.“Some of us might want to play a round of golf,” said the former waiter, captain and maître d’ who is a retired chief operating officer and general manager of a country club.“We plan to travel on the ferry to see the Island from a different perspective. Most of us did not use the ferry while we lived in Bermuda, we drove scooters.“We also have plans to have a get-together at Dockyard with our former colleague, Valerio Ausenda.“We will have 18 people on the cruise and nine people who will fly in. Living on the Island there are six people we know of and still have contact with.”Those travelling to Bermuda will come from many countries, including England, Germany, Austria, Canada and South Africa, where Bill Harrop is the owner of the original balloon safaris in Johannesburg.He will be joined on the trip by his wife Mary, their daughter and her husband and daughter. Bill, originally from England, was an guitar-singing entertainer at the hotel at the time.Most of those coming for the reunion are in their 70s and enjoying retirement.Alfred Bassler (wife Louise) of Montreal, Canada is a senior executive with Hudson Bay Company; Paolo Bonanni (wife Pauline) of England is the owner of Select Resort Ltd;Harald Fellinger and wife Karin of Germany are the owners of a toy manufacturing company while Rudi Fischer of Austria is a retired regional general manager of travel agencies;Hans Kuhnel and wife Elizabeth of Canada own several restaurants while Lothar (wife Olga) is a retired technical advisor for Ford Motor Company.Werner Sapp remained in the hotel industry and is a retired general manager at Fairmont Hotels worldwide.
