Angry DeCouto to boycott BMRC races
Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club (BMRC) spokesman Paul DeCouto says he will boycott all future race events in an angry protest against the structuring of the club.
DeCouto, the Super Bike Class champion, is disgruntled with the BMRC's decision-making policy and believes the members should take full control of the running of the Southside club.
He will meet with club members tonight at the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) at 7 p.m. and has refused to help promote any more race events until the ownership of the club is re-organised.
"I am boycotting all Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club race events," said DeCouto, who has been involved in racing for the last ten years. "My reason for this protest is directly related to the current structure of the BMRC Ltd."
"Until such a time that the members both own and are in full control of the BMRC Ltd and the BMRC, I will not be participating in any race events or assisting with the promotion of the sport.
"I have spoken with the BMRC committee and they have assured me that the necessary steps are being taken to correct the current structure."
A dispute between club officials and Government over the safety of the Clearwater track resulted in it being closed down for two months earlier this summer, and it's believed DeCouto was unhappy with the way the owners handled the affair.
The row saw club president David Jones fall foul of Government officials when he moved a new set of bleachers for fans into place without their permission and was forced to apologise for his actions, which led to the Department of Youth and Sport closing the track to spectators.
Jones declined to comment when contacted yesterday.
The BMRC have helped develop the talents of the late Toriano Wilson, who raced in the prestigious US Red Bull Series, and overseas competitor Antoine Richards.
