Bermuda's triumphant swimmers cause a splash
It has proven to be a fruitful few weeks for Bermuda's young swimmers both at home and abroad.
Olympic hopefuls Roy-Allan Burch and Kiera Aitken continue to enjoy success overseas.
Aitken, a veteran of the 2004 Olympics, recently set national records in the 100 metres and 200m freestyle events. Burch, who attends Springfield College in the US, is preparing for the NCAA Championships later in March. Both are close to meeting the qualifying standards for the 2008 Olympics.
Diver Katura Horton-Perinchief, who also performed at the 2004 Olympics, competed at an Olympic qualifier World Cup in Beijing last weekend. She came 26th out of the final qualifying group with a points total of 223.20 after five dives.
Horton-Perinchief will now have until June to determine if she is able to secure a spot at the 2008 Olympics.
Overseas competitor Jason Mastalir competed at the recent 2008 Speedo Eastern Championships, setting two Bermuda age group records in the 100m (1:01.17) and 200m (2:12.88) backstroke events.
He also produced both age group and national records in the 50m backstroke with a time of 28.80.
His time for the 200m backstroke led to his selection for an elite training camp for preparation for the Canada Games in 2009.
Mastalir continued his fast paced swimming at the Quebec Provincial Championships where he set another six records, five age group and one national record.
The national record was set in the 50m backstroke with a time of 27.84.
He also shattered the existing 17-18 year old age group records in the 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle events with a time of 2:06.44.
Other 17-18 year old age group records set were in the 200m freestyle (1:55.50) and the 100m backstroke (58.98).
These record performances earned Mastalir three silvers and two bronze medals.
At the Eastern Independent School Swimming Championships Rebecca Sharpe was 5th in the 100m backstroke with a personal best of 58.53, Nick Thomson was 13th in the 100m freestyle with a personal best of 48.52 and Julian Fletcher was 13th in the 100m breaststroke with a personal best of 1:00.77. This time qualifies him for the FINA Youth World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico.
Locally, at the Mayflower Management Services meet at the BASA pool, the highlight was yet another qualifier for the Carifta Swimming Championships, Alexander Brown. Brown now brings the number of swimmers on the team to 14.
The swimmers that will take part in the Championships are Kellan DeSilva, Julian Fletcher, Emma Franklin, Eleanor Gardner, Morgan Hopkins, Rebecca Heyliger, Nick Patterson, Rachael Petty, Rebecca Sharpe, Nick Thomson and Denzell Wellman.
