Despite being the wrong side of 40, Kent Richardson is still going strong.

The Island triathlete is aiming for the Commonwealth Games and if his current form is anything to go by he might just be on course for an appearance in Manchester in July.

Richardson, 43, took part in the 19th Annual Great Clermont Triathlon in Florida over the weekend - a 1.5 kilometre swim, 40K cycle and 10K run.

He came in 25th out of more than 1,000 entrants and was the top finisher in the 40-44 category with a time of 2:10.54.

To make the squad for England, Richardson needs to shave another ten minutes off that time but he is confident he can make the mark.

"It's tough. There is no doubt about what they are asking us to do. To break two hours is going to be hard," he said. "Even for Tyler (Butterfield), and that is the future right there.

"It is a tough, daunting task but I reckon you just need to put everything altogether. It's just having that good race where everything comes together."

A bubbly character even on his bad days, Richardson remains upbeat about the way things are going.

"I am very focused and very excited. And that race there, to go 2:10 off a no-taper, I am ecstatic," he said. "I was a little heavy legged cycling, wasn't that light on my feet when I was running and it was still there, still good enough to pop a good one."

Richardson said it was just a question of fine tuning now.

"I am just trying to change a couple of things in my technique in the way I am swimming and I think it will come out OK," he said. "I tried to do it out there, but it didn't really work out. I swam off course quite a bit. Put it this way I didn't have a nice straight line. It was pretty bad but I still came in relatively decent.

"We've overloaded enough over the last two months since I have been here and now everything is a little more specific," he went on. "I have the St. Anthony's triathlon which is on April 27 and 28 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

"Then I am going to hit Memphis in May, another Olympic distance race. That is where I am really hoping to pop a really good race."
