KNIFEMAN THREATENS SENATOR
Two days before hosting the Hott 107.5 Peace Rally in response to increasing acts of violence in Bermuda, Thaao Dill, one of the radio station's presenters, was assaulted at knife point on his way to work.
Senator Dill, however, was not commenting on the event and it was reported that Hott 107.5 was considering hiring security and taking other measures to protect its staff.
According to Police reports around 5:40 a.m. yesterday, Sen. Dill was assaulted on Union Street in Pembroke by an unknown man as he was entering the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) building.
Sen. Dill was not injured and the 5ft 6in, 150 pound, dark-skinned male assailant left the scene, dropping the bladed article as he ran.
A spokesperson for the radio station had been reported as saying the attack was to do with comments made on the show and was not a mugging.
While the Senator has made no public comment, it was reported on ZBM TV News last night that Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, currently off-Island, had spoken with Sen. Dill about the incident and had offered reassurance.
The incident featured on radio talk shows yesterday.
Marsha Jones whose son Shaundae, 20, was shot leaving the Club Malabar nightclub in Dockyard on April 27 2003, and who is speaking at the rally, yesterday urged the Island to come together to stop the violence that has taken over the Island.
She said: "I think it's important that we all start coming together as a community and see what can be done about it. It's not getting worse it is worse."
"It's getting to be very scary out there. We need to come together to figure out what we can do. It's so bad. It's like the violence is controlling us."
"They don't fear anything and anything that comes into their minds they do it. I hope people do come out 'cause it's not just affecting the victims, which is myself and others, we all think it's not going to happen to us."
"I beg people to come out and come together we obviously don't know who is next. The Government as well as the community, policing, we all should be there."
"I have had enough; enough is enough."
The event, which has been advertised on Hott 107.5 and on Facebook, will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Bernard's Park.
Organisers of the event yesterday said they thought Premier Ewart Brown would be there as would American motivational speaker Les Brown and his daughter Ona Brown Nutter, Bishop Vernon G. Lambe of the First Church of God, among others.
Those attending have been encouraged to wear white. The event's Facebook page says: "And make sure you come out sporting your whitest of white apparel to visually manifest this idea of unity and peace. One Love."
The Peace Rally comes in the wake of the stabbing death of teenager Kellon Hill, the slaying of schoolgirl Rhiana Moore, and other acts of violence such as the drive-by shooting in Hamilton earlier this month.
On the Internet alone Sunday's event has at least 207 attending as Inter-Island Communications, the parent company of Hott 107.5, said they are committed to uplifting the community, adding: ""This is a peaceful gathering in support of ending violence in Bermuda, especially among the youth. Inter-Island Communications Ltd is deeply committed to uplifting our island community, and as such we want to bring the entire community together to remind ourselves how powerful we are as a united front."
Anyone with information about the assault should contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
