US top nerd to help local fund raiser
Next month, actor Jaleel White, who plays Steve Urkel on the popular television show Family Matters will be coming to Bermuda as a guest of The Learning Centre.
While final details of Mr. White's visit are still being worked out, Mrs.
Martha Dismont, director of the centre, confirmed that the popular young actor would participate in three events to help raise funds for the local tutoring facility.
"First, there will be a private welcoming party, when people will be invited to come and learn about The Learning Centre. Then, on July 6 there will be an event at Bernard Park where participants in all the nursery and summer day camps will be invited to meet Jaleel and also find out more about The Learning Centre.
"Finally, we are arranging a family evening to give families an opportunity to meet Jaleel. There will also be a Jaleel lookalike contest, and we'll also be getting some help from Bootsie,'' Mrs. Dismont explained.
Admission fees and other information will be announced in forthcoming advertisements.
Mr. White will be travelling with other members of his family as well as some friends, and plans to stay here a week.
"We understand he is a very nice young man, a warm and caring individual,'' Mrs. Dismont said.
Born in 1976, Mr. White began performing at age three after a teacher spotted his comedic talent and suggested to his parents that their son pursue a career in show business.
Mr. White has appeared in more than 30 US national television commercials, including one for Jello Pudding Pops with Bill Cosby. His television series career began with a guest starring role in The Jeffersons . He has also appeared in Charlie & Company, Silence of the Heart, Leftovers, Kids Don't Tell, Camp Cucamonga, Mr. Belvedere, Step by Step, the Jay Leno Family Special and Full House.
Originally scheduled to make just one guest appearance as Steve Urkel in Family Matters in 1989, Jaleel White's talent and popular appeal led to producers making him a series regular.
Since then, Urkel has become America's most popular nerd, with a toy doll created in his image.
Mr. White lives with his parents in California. In his spare time he plays basketball and tennis, collects baseball cards, and enjoys cooking.
Despite his acting success, Mr. White continues to study and aims to attend the University of Southern California film school.
