Spreading some festive cheer
Tis the season to give.
And a group of talented performers have been taking the old adage to heart this holiday season.
Members of the Gina Spence Productions in Christ have been spreading the spirit of Christmas to those, who for various reasons, cannot get out and about this yuletide season.
"We do all of the prisons, Agape House and the Lighthouse,'' explained Ms Spence. "We have singers, dancers and actors to spread some Christmas cheer.
"This year we have left a window open in the show to allow the audience to share some of their talent.'' Yesterday, Ms Spence and her 24-person crew visited the Co-Ed facility in St.
George's to get residents into the festive mood.
Tomorrow the Christmas Ministry will travel to the West Gate Correctional Facility in Dockyard and Sunday they will pay a visit to the Prison Farm in St. George's.
"It's all about encouraging people, especially at this time of the year,'' she explained. "We're trying to bring a smile to their faces -- its all about giving.'' And the show-biz veteran said the Christmas performances were a gratifying way to get ready for the holidays.
"We've been doing this since 1985,'' she recalled. "There have been some emotional times for us.
"Christmas seems to amplify everything your going through, whether it be sickness or incarceration, so these types of performances are the most gratifying,'' And Ms Spence and her Christmas angels are not content with just raising spirits -- they also want to raise some funds for the homeless via a street festival this evening.
"The Street Fest raises money for the homeless,'' she explained. "It costs about $55 to house someone from Christmas to New Years. People will be circulating pledge forms and at the end of the evening we will present the money to the Salvation Army to enable people to stay there if they can't afford it.
"The theme this year is Jesus is the Reason for the Season','' she added.
"Santa is nice, gifts are nice and sharing joy is nice, but the season is really about the birth of Jesus.
"We're trying to share that with the community -- share the reason for the season!'' The Street Fest for the Homeless kicks off at 6 p.m. this evening on Court Street in Hamilton.
"We will have a live remote with Power 95,'' she added. "The stores will be open, so hopefully we will attract people to the shop in the area.
"The restaurant will be open and at the end of the evening we will be giving out treats to the children.
"We will have a stage set up and the music will be by Trinity Sound Crew,'' she added. "We're trying to create a real high-energy evening.
"I hope people come out and support the cause and celebrate and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas.'' Showing the right spirit: Gina Spence
