Speakers tell students of what career possibilities are out there
Bermuda College students got a chance to see what their future career possibilities were at the Paget facility's seventh annual Career Day this week.
Following registration and a rousing speech from Progressive Labour Party MP Dale Butler, workshops featuring representatives from a variety of fields kicked off.
On hand were speakers who touched on retail, travel, social work, law enforcement, occupational therapy, podiatry, cosmetology and accounting.
Students received the chance to ask questions and collect information about their chosen fields of interest.
They heard lectures and received ideas on what types of jobs were available in their chosen field of study.
The workshops were followed by the Career Show which featured some 75 separate presenters in fields ranging from accounting to veterinary sciences.
Some students even got hands on experience with the actual tools of the trade featured in some of the various booths.
And some received different type of hands-on experience at the Mind, Body Wellness booth, which offered a massage demonstration for anyone brave enough to try it.
Bermuda College Dean of Students Sheridan Talbot said: "It was an excellent turnout. I think the students got a lot out of it. They interacted quite well with the presenters. "This is actually the seventh annual Career Day we have had. We hold this event for Bermuda College students only. This time we had approximately 75 presenters in our workshops and career show in everything from actuary sciences to mortuary sciences.
"Overall, I think it was an excellent day.'' Students received a questionnaire to fill out regarding their likes and dislikes about the Career Day, but most told The Royal Gazette they enjoyed the experience.
Kaye-Anne Newton, 18, said: "I thought it was very interesting. I especially liked the speakers during the workshops; the nurse and the physician. I want to become a surgeon, but I'm thinking about getting my Nursing degree first.'' Leslieanne Saltus, 21, whose career interest is in obstetrics and gynaecology said: "This was very, very interesting. I learned a lot of new stuff.
Everything had something to interest the students.'' And Stephen Astwood, 18, said: "It seems to get better every year. I learned a lot of things. My interest is in computers, but I like music also.''
