Tyler tops again over tough course
Bicycle Association's mountain bike series event at Ferry Point Park.
Having completed the International 10K the previous day, the multi-talented Butterfield comfortably won the 10-mile race on Sunday in 1:03.52, more than two minutes ahead of Brian Steinhoff (1:06.32).
New Zealander Geoff Wing rounded out the top three in 1:07.30.
The brutal two-mile course was varied and challenging, presenting slippery climbs and nail-biting descents which kept riders on their toes, and as it was mostly single-track, provided limited opportunities for passing.
After an explosive mass start which saw riders scrambling to be among the leaders though a series of bottlenecks, Peter Matcham, Brian Steinhoff and junior Trovaughn Smith set the early pace, while Butterfield settled in and waited for the leaders to fade.
Two laps into the race Matcham and Steinfoff paid the price for their over enthusiasm while Butterfield rode at the demanding pace set by Smith.
When Smith finished the junior race, Butterfield gave nothing back to his competition, increased his lead and went on to win comfortably.
As Matcham and Steinhoff faded, Geoff Wing moved up the field to spend most of the race in second place. However, during the final lap Steinhoff dug deep into his reserves to recover his position and finish second.
Youngster Smith dominated his race in the 15-16 boys from start to finish, winning his six-mile jaunt in 37:35, five minutes faster than Kyle Smith who finished in 42:37. Adam Petty cruised to third in a time of 47:21.
Yet again Tyler Abbott rode to victory in the 13-14 category to finish in 45:46 over the six miles. Khamari Phipps finished second in 48:13, and Alex Holmes took third in 1:03.44.
Justin Collis, Tim Fox and Ricky Souza took first, second and third respectively in the 11-12 category over four miles. Marc Smith and Dominic White rounded out the top two positions in the under-10s.
Owen Burgess took line honours in the novice category in a time of 49:21 over six miles, 35 seconds faster than second place finisher Chris Smith. Ian Fox won the over-40 veterans category.
Race five of the nine-race series takes place this Sunday at Great Head Park in St. David's at 9.00 a.m.
