Youngsters look to put on an All Star performance

Benefited from All Star Game scouting.

Soccer coaches from top US colleges are to be encouraged to come back to Bermuda's shores to run the rule over the Island's stars of the future.

After a one year absence the All Star games are once again being held, with the National Sports Centre on Frog Lane the venue.

The matches are being held tomorrow night and involve primary, middle and senior school children.

In years gone by coaches from the US have visited the Island to single out players for college scholarships and, although there will not be any there tomorrow, Cal Simons, chairman of the Bermuda Schools Sports Federation Ltd, hopes they will come back in the future.

"In the past we had coaches come in and watch the likes of John Barry Nusum and Devarr Boyles who were fortunate enough to go on and secure scholarships abroad," he said. "The Bermuda School Sports Federation (BSSF) would really like to get the coaches back because I think we have a lot of quality players here who are also academically sound."

Simons said a communication breakdown may have led to the coaches not returning.

"Last year we did not have the event because there were no senior team at all," he said. "This year the coaches are really pushing it and trying to get the boys back out in the hope of getting it back to where it was three, four or five years ago."

Simons said the move back to the National Sports Centre had been greatly welcomed.

"Everyone talks about wanting to go up there and play on the nice surface," he said. "We used to call it the carpet when we were young and the pitch still looks very good."

Simons said it was an honour for a child to take part in the matches. "It is a prestigious event. The schools select players and they try and out and then coaches select 15 or 16 players, trying to get at least one player from each school," he said. "The idea is to get them playing and highlight them."

The primary school boys take to the field at 5.30 p.m. tomorrow, followed by the middle school boys at 7 p.m. and the senior boys at 8.30 p.m. Entry is $3 for students and $5 for adults and tickets, available on the night, can be bought from schools.

In order that the girls do not miss out the BSSF is also organising an All Star netball tournament which takes place at Bernard Park on Saturday.

"We need to highlight the girls," said Simons. "So we decided to do this All Star game and with that the Bermuda Netball Association said they would do one as well. The first match is the primary school girls at 10 a.m., then at 11 a.m. we have the middle school girls and 12 p.m. the senior secondary school girls. Then at 1 p.m. we will have the Netball Association All Star Select match."
