Games in need of `community effort'

Sports Minister Randy Horton has issued "a rallying call" for the public to contribute to the Island's hosting of the 2004 CARIFTA Games.

Addressing a forum organised by the Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) last Thursday to give an overview of what this undertaking entails, Horton pledged Government would lead by example with "a significant contribution", including the input of vital ministerial resources.

In addition, BTFA president Judy Simmons told the gathering of personnel from Government agencies and the corporate sector at Harmony Club that it would cost at least $500,000 to put on the annual showpiece of Caribbean junior athletics which takes place over the Easter weekend. This, she disclosed, was how much it cost the Bahamas to stage this year's Games.

However, she noted, expenses could be defrayed depending on what arrangements were reached with various entities, particularly regarding hotel and transportation costs.

In his remarks, Horton urged his compatriots "to volunteer their services, to provide sponsorship and to give of their best to make this event a wonderful feast of competition, fun and hospitality".

"There will be many challenges . . . but I am confident we will rise to the occasion in supporting the BTFA with our time, expertise, money and enthusiasm. We want to maintain our reputation of exceeding expectations.

"The CARIFTA Games were last held in Bermuda in 1980. We are long overdue an encore. We want to make these Games something our visitors will forever remember. We want these Games to be a catalyst for our youth to become involved in athletics," said the minister.

The BTFA held the presentation, Simmons explained, to give an idea of how much will be involved in hosting the meet but more-detailed meetings would take place with relevant sectors later.

"From the very beginning we said this is an event that all Bermuda has to participate in. So, to educate everyone about CARIFTA - because most people don't know about it - we decided to have an introductory meeting and invite all the different sectors of the community.

"We intend to continue this as we move forward so more people can learn about CARIFTA and join in giving the support that is vitally needed to make this a success."
