Simmons stuns Lethargic Town

St. George's took advantage of another lethargic performance by favoured Dandy Town, upsetting the Hornets 1-0 at St. John's field yesterday.

The victory continued a trend for the east-enders that has seen them win every match in which they have managed to score -- all four of their triumphs by 1-0 margins.

A brilliantly-taken effort by Melvin Simmons four minutes after the interval provided the lone shining moment in this drab affair that did little to inspire the small crowd, which braved the harsh elements.

On numerous occasions good approach work was either wasted or dismissed by a firm St. George's defence directed by national team player Neil Paynter.

But while Town dictated it was St. George's who had the more clear-cut opportunities, although, they too failed to execute when chances were presented.

Forward Greg Foggo of St. George's spotted an opening in the fifth minute and fired from 20 yards with his left foot, only to have the ball sail harmlessly over the bar.

Three minutes later a similar scenario ensued, this time with Marlon Outerbridge in the role of the failed protagonist.

Sighs of relief were heard from the visitors' bench when in the 17th minute Wayne Campbell connected with a glancing header following a right-wing corner by Walter Musson and the ball barely missed going in at the far post.

This triggered a response by Foggo, ever-present throughout, as he darted along the left flank, cut in and centred, however a trio of team-mates could not connect from four yards out, with goalkeeper Cymande Davis unsighted.

Sinclair Gibbons contributed another glaring miss eight minutes from the interval falling short with a weak diving header that did little to trouble the 'keeper.

"It's happening again,'' said Town coach Mark Trott of his side's ineptitude in front of goal, as they once again failed to take advantage of territorial domination throughout the opening half.

The message went unheeded and St. George's burst into the lead moments after the break.

A quick counter-attack had Outerbridge feed Simmons on the right with a looping through ball. Without hesitation the latter fired towards goal and watched as his dipping effort befuddled a backpedalling Davis, who was left clutching thin air as the ball went in over his head and nestled into the back of the net.

Invigorated by the strike, St. George's continued to carve a trail toward the Town goal, while their opponents laid down -- possibly content in the knowledge they have booked a place in the Dudley Eve Trophy tournament.

Musson and Kris Martin toiled hard up front for the home side and second-half substitute Lionel Furbert provided a mini-spark with his insertion, but all their efforts went for nought.
