The minister is not proposing the abolition of Parliament. He merely wants to send his out of shape colleagues on this year's End-to-End charity walk.

Mr. Scott said watching overweight MPs struggle up the stairs to Parliament on Friday had given him the idea of urging them to get involved in the walk.

He told The Royal Gazette : "End-to-End benefits a lot of people, but I know several MPs that could benefit from being involved.

"Seeing those waistlines and watching them come up the steps, I know they need the walk more than the walk needs them.'' When pressed to name names, Mr. Scott joked: "David Allen - if he can find his way from one end to the other.

"Dame Lois Browne Evans, although she does more talking than walking.

"John Barritt could certainly do with it, and Michael Dunkley, because hopefully he would get lost! "Senator Milton Scott could do it, although he may have to do it over a few days.

"And Max Burgess, the mouth from the south, should do it to give himself something productive to do for the first time!'' Mr. Scott, perhaps with one eye on his career, made no reference to his own leader, Premier Jennifer Smith.

He was speaking after the event organisers unveiled the winners of the art competition to design t-shirts for this year's event on May 5, and unveiled the names of the charities who will benefit.

MPs get their marching orders Lisa Anne Bardgett won $500 for designing the winning entry which will feature on the t-shirts and posters.

And Saltus Grammar student Andrew Barnes won a $250 voucher for Internet services for drawing the winning entry in the youth competition. His design will feature on t-shirts for the Itsy Bitsy walk for toddlers.

The prizes were presented by Colonial Insurance general manager William Madeiros on behalf of the Colonial Group.

The charities which will benefit from this year's walk are: Big Brothers and Big Sisters (which provides adult mentoring for children particularly from single parent homes); the Fathers' Resource Centre (for parenting classes for divorcing or separating couples); the Women's Resource Centre (for campaigns to help reduce the risk of sexual assault); and the Resident /Family Council-Continuing Care Programme at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (which provides equipment for residents).

Patron sponsors of this year's event are the Bank of Bermuda and BTC Mobility.

The runners-up in the adult art competition were Dallas Bowers, Lisza Rawlins, Melanie Whaley, Marilyn Steede, Patricia Miller and Pat Barboza.

Runners-up in the youth section were Saltus Grammar students Ellissa Lambert, Joanna Hendrickson, Cameron Cooper, Samantha Saunders, Danielle Baikie, Colin James, Savannah Flood, and Renae Black.
