Mrs. Lodge's 70th birthday presents go to good cause

Mrs. Marie Lodge donated $1,301 each to the Bright Temple AME Church in Warwick and the Bermuda Physically Handicapped Association on Wednesday, not $301 as reported in yesterday's newspaper.

Mrs. Marie Lodge decided that her 70th birthday was going to benefit others rather than herself.

So she asked family and friends not to buy her presents but to donate cash which she could pass on to two very good causes.

And Mrs. Lodge, of Dunscombe Road, Warwick, was able to donate $301 each to the Bright Temple AME Church in Warwick and the Bermuda Physically Handicapped Association.

Sprightly Mrs. Lodge said: "I have everything I need and on my 65th birthday I decided that if I was going to reach 70 I would not have any presents myself.'' Mrs. Margaret Carter, President of the Bermuda Physically Handicapped Association, was delighted with the gesture. Mrs. Carter said: "The money will probably be used to buy wheelchairs. We are always short of wheelchairs.'' The Rev. Gregory Leonard, the new minister at the Bride Temple, said: "We will put the money to our musical programme for the young people.

"It is a programme that will benefit generations to come, because we are teaching our young people music so that they can be teachers in future years.'' Mrs. Lodge was delighted that the money will go into music, saying: "I used to play the guitar myself.'' Mrs. Carter presented Mrs. Lodge with a huge bunch of flowers to thank her for her donation.
