Suzuki teacher in the spotlight

Violin at City Hall this Friday, performing works by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Bartok and jazz great, Scott Joplin.

The idea of a concert was inspired by the fact that the young pupils have never heard their teachers play.

Artists who will be appearing include piano teachers Krista Audax, who taught Suzuki piano for seven years in France and in Cincinnati, Ohio, before coming to Bermuda in 1990. Imogen Davis studied at the University of Colorado and later taught at the College-Conservatory Preparatory Department. She also teaches the Kindermusik system.

Steven Davis and Elizabeth Garner also come from the College-Conservatory in Cincinnati. Mr. Davis went on to the Manhattan School of Music in New York and then to Taiwan where he became Professor of Piano at Soo-Chow University and made many concert and radio appearances.

Miss Garner, also teaches the Orff and Kindermusik programmes which emphasises the development of musical understanding and appreciation through listening, movement, and playing rhythm instruments. Besides the piano, she plays the organ, harpsichord and guitar.

Violin teacher Joan Stewart started to play the violin under the Suzuki method at the age of five and obtained her Masters in violin performance from the University of Northern Iowa.

The Suzuki Academy had its origins in 1989 when three Suzuki teachers joined forces to form the Bermuda Suzuki Association. By 1991 there were four teachers and a rapidly growing waiting list. The association found that running a school, and continuing their programme of Suzuki programmes and concerts was too much for one volunteer committee. As a result, the Suzuki Academy was set up in May 1991 as a separate, non-profit organisation with charity status and run by a Board of Governors.

The full curriculum now offers the Suzuki method in teaching piano, violin, viola and the guitar, plus the Kindermusik programme for children from 18 months to six years of age. There are currently over 250 children enrolled.

The concert takes place on Friday, June 5 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets at $12 for adults, and $6 for students and senior citizens are available from The Music People on Reid Street, Tel. 295-8073 or the Bermuda Suzuki Academy on Richmond Road, Tel. 295-7932.
