Village ready to hold second clinic
Club is set to host their second annual soccer clinic at Bernard Park from August 23 until September 3.
Former Bermuda international Andrew Bascome will once again spearhead the venture for children age five to 14 -- boys and girls -- and there are several current and past North Village players involved in various capacities.
Herbie Bascome, Robert Calderon, Derek (Rocky) Bean and Keith Jennings are a few of those scheduled to lead the young charges through their paces.
Fundamental aspects of the game will be emphasised as the programme attempts to raise the standard among the Island's youth.
"Our aims are to go back to the basics,'' explained Sherwin Dill, chairman of the North Village sports programme and also charged with overseeing the administrative aspects of the clinic.
"There are a lot of kids at present going through the system without being taught the basics from the beginning ... and once they get to a certain age it's too hard to reach them and change bad habits that may have developed.
"We also make a concerted effort to teaching the right things about soccer, such as rules and regulations and basics like heading, dribbling, defending and attacking.'' The idea of forming such a clinic came about after Dill and others travelled to a tournament in Canada one year ago with an under 12 side and were stunned by the superior standard of play shown by opposing teams.
Last year saw over 40 participants in a highly successful first outing and Dill indicated there is room for at least 50 kids this year.
However, the camps are not all soccer, sprinkled in are various unrelated subjects like swimming, movies and discussions of life outside of football.
Registration comes at a cost of $25 per child for each week and will take place at the club on August 9 and 16 between 6-8 p.m.
