Court Street shooting trial to begin
A jury is today due to begin hearing evidence against a 26-year-old man accused of a murder conspiracy and triple shooting on Court Street last May 23.
Cervio Cox, of Clarendon Road, Smith's, is charged with conspiring with "persons unknown" to murder J'Dun Thompson.
He's also accused of conspiring with unknown persons to unlawfully shoot Mr. Thompson with a loaded firearm and wounding him with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
He faces further charges of wounding Raymond Burgess Jr. and Raymond Burgess Sr. with intent, and using a firearm to commit those offences.
Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves yesterday told potential jurors in the trial: "This case is a case where the Crown is alleging a conspiracy to murder and a shooting of three persons in the Court Street area. Nobody is dead as a result."
He also told them: "In this case you may hear names such as Parkside, 42nd Street, Middletown, Court Street.
"You may or may not hear about somebody called Kenwandee Robinson who is now dead, and a Mikey Adams."
The judge added that the jury may also hear about people from Warwick and Smith's. He explained he was telling the jury this so they could consider any issues that may affect them in coming to a fair verdict.
Prosecutor Robert Welling also read a list of more than 30 names that may come up during the case. They included producer Kevin Bean, Gina Spence-Farmer of Pride Bermuda, the three men who were allegedly wounded, and a number of Police officers.
Eventually, a panel of seven woman and five men was selected to hear the case, but they were sent home after being sworn in so the lawyers could discuss legal issues.
The evidence is expected to begin today.
Cox is represented by Jerome Lynch QC, from England, and Elizabeth Christopher, from Bermuda. The prosecutors are Robert Welling and Larissa Burgess, and the case is expected to last between two and three weeks.
