Bean, Walcott head Pacers' golden league

Walcott, each won two gold medals as the local team won seven medals at the final East Coast Invitational track meet in Bethesda, Maryland at the weekend.

The Bermuda team marked their 18th appearance at the annual summer meet by winning five gold, one silver and one bronze medal, though the 21-member team fell short of their goal of improving on the 17 medals they won in 1991.

The weekend event marked the final time for the meet which will switch to Duke University in North Carolina next year, probably under a different name.

Bean and Walcott led by example in their respective events as Bean's gold medal performances in the triple jump and high jump, as well as a silver in the 100 metres, enabled her to win her second Outstanding Athlete award. This time she won it in the 15-16 girls, having also taken the award for the 13-14 girls three years ago.

Bean won the girls' triple jump with a personal best jump of 39 feet, 10 inches and the 15-16 high jump with a leap of five feet, four inches. Her time of 12.2 seconds in the 100 metres was good for second place as she capped an outstanding performance.

Walcott also produced a double gold medal performance, winning the 15-16 boys' 1500 metres with a PB of 4:09.43 which dropped some 15 seconds off his previous best performance. The talented youngster also won the 800 metres with a time of 1:58.4 which was also a personal best.

Danielle Watson added to the medal haul for the Bermudians with a gold in the 13-14 girls' long jump with a personal best leap of 17 feet, one inch. She then went on to reach the final in both the 200 metres and 400 metres where she placed fifth in both events in times of 26.1 and 58.6 respectively.

Latroya Darrell, making her debut at the East Coast Invitational, placed third in the 11-12 girls' high jump with a personal best performance of four feet, six inches. She narrowly missed out on a second bronze medal in the long jump where she had a leap of 13 feet, nine inches, which was a PB.

In other creditable performances, Gabriel Wilkinson placed fifth in both the 17-18 boys' shot and discus with throws of 49 feet, five inches and 158 feet, seven inches.

Natasha Simmons was sixth in the 11-12 girls' long jump with a leap of 13 feet, five inches while Edmeiko Butterfield was sixth in the 11-12 boys long jump with a PB mark of 14 feet, 11 inches.

The team returns home today at noon.
