McCabe rocket earns Hood revenge

It was a long time in coming but Commercial Division side Robin Hood finally exacted revenge on FA Cup giants PHC during yesterday's Elimination Round at sun-baked Southampton Oval.

Jarlath McCabe's stunning, 63rd-minute free kick was the difference between the teams, providing Hood with no more than they deserved after 90 minutes of hard graft that left their highly-fancied, though inexperienced, opponents clutching at straws.

PHC coach Sammy Swan, a member of the squad who put Hood out at the semi-final stage eight seasons ago, spent much of the time writhing on the sidelines as his youngsters failed to execute.

But without a genuine playmaker against a team whose only `failing' coming into the tie was advanced years, the Zebras were only a shadow of the reputation from which nine FA Cup titles were borne.

"It was brilliant to get a result like this against PHC,'' said veteran midfielder Paul Scope at the end. "We wanted to stay with them as best we could for the first half and then see what happened.

"We worked so very hard on our set-pieces and today that was where we were most dangerous.'' McCabe's strike from 25 yards out on the right would have beaten most goalkeepers.

After a clever step-over from a team-mate, the midfielder hit a wicked left-foot shot that beat Carlyle Crockwell and smashed downward off the bar before depositing itself into the roof of the net.

Stunned though they were, PHC were unable to turn possession into meaningful attacks, leaving Tim Perry and former First Division star Paul Towlson with relatively simple mop-up jobs.

The only real chance fell to substitute Edwin Bean who missed completely on a rare occasion a PHC forward got behind the Hood defence.

Hood goalkeeper Adrian Arnold could not have thought that parrying Ricky Mallory's third-minute blast to safety would be his only action of the day.

But it was.

The diminutive 'keeper was not to be further tested by cross nor shot, owing as much to PHC's ineptitude as to solid defending.

Hood would have taken the lead much sooner but Crockwell did remarkably well to keep out Perry's header on the stroke of half-time.

That should have been the warning for PHC to heed. They did not, and paid a dear price.

St. George's 1 St. David's 0 A 20-yard scorcher by captain Marlon Outerbridge in the first half gave St.

George's a narrow victory at Wellington Oval.

The win avenged a league defeat at the hands of St. David's in midweek, and it was hard earned as they had to absorb relentless pressure in the second half as St. David's tried desperately to equalise.

St. George's also had to play the last 15 minutes with 10 men after defender Kerwin Moreno was ejected for a second booking when he was involved in a scuffle with St. David's winger Worrell Bean who was also booked.

Outerbridge's goal in the 36th minute, which turned out to be the winner, was the highlight of the first half in which there were few clear cut chances.

Sydney Minors in the St. David's goal was given no chance when Outerbridge followed up on a play down the left involving Everest Trott and Ryan Steede before Melvin Simons laid the ball onto his path on the edge of the box. The first time shot screamed into the back of the net.

The second half produced more excitement as St. David's quickly threatened with four straight corners, the last of which was headed off the line by player-coach Neil Paynter.

Lionel Cann, a first half replacement for the injured Shane Weeks, began to cause some problems for the St. George's defence along with Worrell Bean.

In the closing minutes substitute Del Hollis shot wide from a good position and then from a Hollis throw, Judah Tucker volleyed over the top. Bean also went close as the minutes ticked away, as St. George's held on for their first win of the season.

Right on the final whistle, St. George's sub Donovan Thompson ran through the St. David's defence before his shot was saved by Minors.

I.Rangers 5 Pest Control 0 Former Somerset Trojans players Troy Berkeley, Duane DeRosa and Michael Corday all got among the goals as Ireland Rangers romped to a comfortable victory at Somerset.

Both teams were winless in their respective leagues coming into this match but it was Rangers, formerly of the Commercial League but now in their first season in the Second Division, who were soon in control. Defender DeRosa pushed forward and unleashed a rocket from about 35 yards that found the back of the net in the 14th minute. Sean Simons added the second from a well-taken header in the 43rd minute to give Rangers a 2-0 cushion at the half.

Berkeley marked his first appearance of the season with goals in the 73rd and 85th minutes before Corday closed out the scoring two minutes from the end.

Paget 2 Lobster Pot 1 Second Division side Paget had to come from behind to beat Lobster Pot of the Commercial League as their goals came late in each half at White Hill Field.

Lobster Pot took the lead in the first 15 minutes after some sloppy defensive work by Paget. However, that goal shook them as David Outerbridge equalised five minutes before the interval. Chris Wright notched the winner late in the second half to book a spot in the next round.

MR Onions beat fellow Commercial team Prison Officers 4-2 in the opening match at Somerset.
