Vasco pair come to blows as Burrows grabs winner
Vasco were sent crashing out of the Friendship Trophy as two of their players came to blows at BAA Field last night.
Trojans substitute Kenneth Burrows scored a deserved winner for the west enders eight minutes from time and Vasco rubbed salt into their own wounds with the embarrassing touchline fight involving Jermaine Belboda and Chris Anderson five minutes later.
The incident occurred on the touchline right in front of the Vasco bench moments after striker Anderson had been replaced by substitute Art Tyrell.
Belboda, who had argued demonstratively with Anderson on several occasions during the match, walked over towards the bench and exchanged words once more with Anderson, who reacted by coming onto the pitch and squaring up to the midfielder.
The pair then started punching and kicking each other just yards away from where the bulk of the spectators were seated and continued until they were split up by colleagues who rushed up off the Vasco bench to intervene.
Luckily for both, Trojans were on the attack at the time and referee Cal Simons, who was following play, saw nothing of the altercation.
Vasco, fresh from a 3-1 victory over North Village at the weekend, looked marginally the better side in the first half and almost went ahead in stoppage time.
Diallo Sharrieff's free-kick found Dwight Basden, who turned sharply in the penalty area and lashed a right-footed shot which cannoned away off the crossbar.
That was the closest the league champions came to a goal in the first period, though a low, curling free-kick by Kuma Smith brought a smart save out of Trojans keeper Keenan Tucker.
Earlier a defence-splitting pass by Smith had sent Irwin Burgess clear and he skipped past Tucker, but left himself with too tight an angle to find the net.
Trojans' best attempt came in the 12th minute from David Burchall, who rose to meet a long free-kick from Karl Roberts and sent a looping header inches over the bar.
Another long ball from Roberts caused problems for the Vasco defence five minutes later when namesake Clifford Roberts was relieved to see his attempted clearance fly at speed straight at his goalkeeper Timmy Figureido.
Trojans grew stronger as the match went on and scored the opener on 54 minutes through Jermaine Dill. A glorious pass by Micheal Brangman, played skillfully with the outside of the right foot, found Dill, who stole in front of Figureido and steered his shot between the defenders on the line.
Vasco responded with some pressure of their own and drew level on 70 minutes.
Sharrieff sent in an inviting cross from the right and midfielder Keenan Burchall arrived late at the far post to volley home from close range.
Trojans dominated possession from then on and dispensed with the need for extra time with an 82nd minute winner. Andrew Rahman's pass down the left wing found Burrows in space and he made the most of it, running 30 yards before calmly poking the ball past Figureido.
St. George's 5 Paget 1 St.George's eased into the second round of the Shield with a five-goal trouncing of Paget at BAA Field last night.
Mackie Crane opened the scoring for the east enders in the first minute, but a Kevin Moreno own goal drew Paget level in the 40th minute.
Gregory Foggo restored the St George's lead a minute before half-time and Crane's second goal in the 52nd minute made it 3-1.
Further goals by Gregory Johnson on 63 minutes and Quinton Francis 12 minutes from time rounded off the rout.
