The 11-year-old was second going into the last race at the Hampton Yacht Club, but hit the weather mark in strong currents while in 10th place and did well to manage a 20th place finish.

The youngster has had an excellent summer and last month he was the most successful of Bermuda's five sailors in the World Optimist Championships in Martinique, where he finished 162nd out of 220.

Three of the other four Bermudians taking part finished in the top third of the fleet of 228 boats.

A.J. Black, 15, who competed with Kirkland in Martinique, finished 56th with his best efforts a sixth and a seventh place.

Alan Frith, with best placings of fifth and eighth, finished 68th, while E.

Thompson placed ninth in the 11th race and finished 80th overall.

Intermediate sailor Renae Black was 201st in last Friday's final standings.

SOCCER SOC Bermuda's X Roads Warriors under-12 soccer team bowed out of the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden with a 6-0 defeat in torrential rain.

The Warriors conceded their first goal against Swedish team Akarps on a mudbath of a pitch when goalkeeper Sean Harvey was unable to hang onto the greasy ball after a dipping shot and the ball was scrambled in from close range.

Two more quick goals followed and the Warriors' frustration showed as they conceded two penalties just before half-time.

Howard Ascento, who scored a hat-trick earlier in the tournament, hit the crossbar as the Warriors started the second half more promisingly.

But Akarps added a sixth from a counter attack to complete the rout and eliminate the local team.
