Massive generators arrive this weekend
giant electricity generators on Sunday which Belco says will give it "a more environmentally acceptable plant''.
The two 5.5 megawatt Pielstick Diesel engines weighing nearly 200-tons are arriving on the Island on Sunday morning via the special heavy cargo ship Astra Lift .
Motorists are being asked to cooperate by being patient and by not leaving their cars parked on the route on Sunday morning.
"They will be the biggest things ever on our roads,'' said Corporation Secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt.
The generators are each 60-feet-long, 17-feet-wide and 121 -feet wide. "These two engines will improve our diesel-to-gas turbine plant mix ratio for better overall operating efficiency,'' Bermuda Electric Light Company spokeswoman Mrs. Linda Smith said.
"In order to comply with the new Clean Air Act regulations we will be building a 120-foot common stack for these two engines.'' She noted that over the past year, Belco had retired six of its older diesel generating sets.
The ship is scheduled to arrive, weather permitting, on Saturday night and the generators will be unloaded on Sunday at 8 a.m.
Because of their size, they will be placed on a special tractor trailer at No.
1 Dock.
One will be taken immediately to the Bermuda Electric Light Company via Par-La-Ville Road which will take a considerable time due to the generator's size, Mr. Sherratt said.
A Police spokesman said the load was expected to move at about three miles an hour from No. 1 Dock west along Front Street, Par-La-Ville Road against the flow of traffic, Serpentine Road and on to Cemetery Road, which will be closed to traffic as of Monday, although this will not affect businesses whose access is on the road. A special ramp is being built on Cemetery Road for the installation of the engines into the power house.
"Due to the size of the load it is very important to have the route clear of parked vehicles,'' a Police spokesman said. "We would therefore ask motorists to ensure their vehicles are not parked anywhere on this route during Sunday.
It is hoped to move the load during the morning but will depend on the loading time.'' The other generator will be left on No. 1 Dock for a week, making it necessary for traffic going into No. 1 parking lot to be re-routed for a week -- though parking spots can still be used, Mr. Sherratt noted.
The Corporation apologises for any inconvenience, Mr. Sherratt said. An advisory on the parking situation at No. 1 Dock will be released later.
