Wild bike rider blames UBP

A report in yesterday's Royal Gazette said that an award winning film was made by the Bermuda Biological Station for Research in coordination with Cable and Wireless. The film was in fact made by Media Arts.

A bike rider led Police on a wild chase through Paget, driving on the wrong side of the road -- then blamed the previous Government for his antics.

Danyon Looby, 23, was followed by Traffic Police along Valley Road, Harbour Road, Middle Road and then Manse Road.

He fell off his bike then ran away from Police, only to be caught moments later.

And as soon as he was arrested, Looby told officers: "The UBP made me do it!'' Tuesday afternoon's traffic court session heard Looby, from Banana Lane, Warwick, tried to give Police the slip on October 25 last year.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis threatened him with imprisonment but imposed $1,000 worth of fines.

Looby was also banned from driving any vehicle for two years and given a three-month jail term, suspended for two years.

In a separate incident, an alarm at Riddell's Bay gas station on Middle Road went off at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

But by the time Police officers arrived at the scene of the crime the thief had made off.

It appeared the culprit smashed a glass door and snatched 11 cartons of cigarettes.

And Police also revealed yesterday that thieves broke into St. Paul's Rectory in Paget and took a VCR over the weekend.

The spokesman said Police were also investigating the theft of a water heater on Tuesday morning from a Mission Lane, Pembroke yard.

Police yesterday appealed to anyone who witnessed or had information on these incidents to telephone 295-0011 or the Crimestoppers hotline at 1-800-623-8477.
