New radio talk show to focus on abuse
The Centre Against Abuse will be launching a new radio talk-show programme to “get the word out” about abuse and inform sufferers on how to get help. The charity's executive director Laurie Shiell announced today it was working with Youth and Families Minister Glenn Blakeney to develop the once-monthly programme on Magic 102.7.She said: “We are going to have our own radio show. We just have to talk over the fine details of it. We will be talking about various issues and be bringing people to talk such as lawyers to tell people what their rights are and how to obtain protection orders and what that means.“We will have people like abusers and victims. We are trying to capture everything,” she said.Ms Shiell said a launch date had yet to be set but said the talk-show would be a crucial step in educating the public on spotting signs of abuse and how to help a loved one get out of an abusive relationship.“For us it is important to get the word out to a wider audience and let people know there are services available to them.”She told the Hamilton Rotary Club today that abuse affected men and women, including pregnant mothers and senior citizens. She also said every nationality and ethnic group walking the streets of Bermuda had been touched by domestic violence or abuse.
