<Bt-3z25>Try something new with Ultimate Frisbee

ULTIMATE Frisbee — it might lack the thrills and spills of ultimate fighting but this far more sedate sport is picking up popularity with organisers hoping a Bermuda side can compete internationally this year.Around 35 devotees are now involved in the domestic game and Noah Fields, of the Bermuda Ultimate Frisbee Federation (BUFF), hopes to set up a domestic league.

He is appealing for more to get involved with the Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon sessions at Warwick Academy.

The rules are simple — teams try to work the Frisbee over an end zone like in America football — although Fields says the game has many of the best aspects of other sports.

He said: “Everybody gets to play ‘quarterback’ and everybody gets to play ‘receiver’ which are arguably the two best positions in American football. And it’s like soccer in that you run to find space.

“It is very accessible — all you need is a field and a Frisbee.”

And he said the Frisbee was fairly forgiving in that it tended to hover so even those who don’t throw so well don’t look so bad.

However he admitted it’s a running intensive game with players constantly moving — just as in soccer or basketball.

Fields said the game had been steadily growing Bermuda where it is played by a cosmopolitan mix of races, genders and nationalities while it is already well established across the globe.

“In the US, Canada and the UK Ultimate Frisbee has gotten pretty big. It tends to be a university sport but there is a growing group of post graduates who play. It’s pretty limitless in terms of where it’s played in the world these days.

“We are looking to expand, if we can get enough players we are looking to start a league. We are looking to going overseas and playing in a tournament — represent Bermuda internationally within the next six months. Not on an official basis although who knows?”

The BUFF have yet to nail down a location. “We would like to go somewhere exotic but realistically the east coast is a first step. People are excited. We are also considering hosting a tournament in Bermuda,” he said.

The 34-year-old American started playing Ultimate Frisbee in Manhattan before moving to Bermuda where his commitment ratcheted up.

“It’s great for keeping fit, it’s a lot of fun, it’s strategic. I love it.”
