Tennis season 'a special one' says BLTA president
Bermuda tennis is set for an eventful spring season with a full slate of competitions from juniors through to veterans.
The schedule began last week with the Elbow Beach Open, which according to organisers was "a huge success", indicating that the "2008 season would be a special one".
Some of Bermuda's best showed up for the Elbow Open and president of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) David Lambert, is convinced the season is full of promise.
"We had our best players on hand for the doubles tournament last week", Lambert told The Royal Gazette.
"The standard was high as the players were vying for points which go towards their Davis Cup and Fed. Cup standings".
The men's winners were Andy Bray and James Collieson while Ashley Brookes and Laverne Stowe lifted the ladies' trophy. The mixed doubles champions were Jensen Bascome and Erica Bove.
"All of the finals had the flair and accuracy that you would expect from our best players", Lambert continued. "You could see by the play that the teams had their strategies and ways to win their respective matches, which is always good to see.
"It means the players are thinking the game. One of the finals had sheer power involved which dictated the match."
Today the youth players will be looking to become the best in their respective age groups in the inter-school tennis tournament at the WER Joell Stadium.
"Tomorrow (Friday) we will have the ninth annual ACE Inter-School Doubles Championship," said Lambert. "This week is the Middle Schools tournament in which Warwick Academy are the defending champions in both the boys and girls, so it should be an enjoyable time."
The tournament starts at 12.30 p.m.
