Garden Club gives awards to horticulture students
annual awards ceremony.
The ceremony was held in the Botanical Gardens' Horticultural Hall on Monday afternoon and honoured students studying various horticultural courses at universities across North America and the United Kingdom.
The students, who are at different levels in their university careers, were awarded partial and full scholarships based on their grades and financial needs.
"There aren't really any `winners' so to speak,'' said awards committee chairman Felicite Davidson, "we just try to help as many applicants as possible.'' The scholarship funds are continually being increased in value as the years go by, Mrs. Davidson added, the Club raises the funds through different gardening-related events.
"Past and current Club members and their families have been very generous in donating money as well,'' she said.
The Freer Cox Fund, a collection of partial scholarships awarded to seven students, was formed in memory of the Club's first president. The second memorial fund, which donated two full scholarships, was named after the late garden designers Bayfield & Dorothy Clark.
"I've had birthday celebrations where friends have given money to the scholarship funds rather than to myself but that's great, it means even more to be able to help others,'' commented Mrs. Davidson.
