Bascome booted out
Bermuda Cricket Board have confirmed that promising St. George's player Oronde Bascome has had his full-time contract with the senior national squad terminated and will not play any part in this year's World Cup campaign .
BCB Chief Executive Neil Speight said the son of assistant national coach Herbie Bascome, who himself was disciplined by the governing body last year, would not be included in the squad which will travel to Trinidad, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada later this month to play warm-up games as they prepare for April's World Cup qualifiers in South Africa – a trip that Oronde will also miss.
It was reported by The Royal Gazette earlier this week that Bascome had been pulled out of the squad after failing to attend training last week and instead chose to watch the Dudley Eve football finals in Somerset, and his future with the squad was in doubt.
Speight said the BCB's action had been taken because Bascome was guilty of multiple breaches of his contract.
He didn't elaborate other than to say that no other disciplanary action had been taken against the youngster at this time.
Full-time contracts had been offered to the bulk of the senior national squad earlier this month as the BCB stepped up their efforts to ensure that Bermuda would again take their place in the World Cup on the sub-continent in 2011, repeating their historic performance of 2007.
A BCB source informed The Gazette over the weekend that "Oronde missed a couple of training sessions and didn't have a valid excuse. He went to a football match when everybody else showed up for training."
However, on Sunday neither BCB president Reggie Pearman nor national coach Gus Logie would confirm Bascome's suspension, referring all inquiries to Speight.
It's believed Bascome was summoned to a meeting with BCB executives last Friday.
It was only last December that BCB officials met with the same player over concerns about his level of commitment to training.
"Oronde hasn't been putting much effort and so Gus met with him before the team travelled to Argentina in December. Gus didn't feel as though Oronde was putting as much effort as he should have been," the BCB source added.
"Oronde was lagging behind and Gus basically told him that if he didn't pull up his socks he can forget it. Oronde may have thought his place was safe but the Board are taking World Cup qualifiers very seriously this time around."
Other national squad players, it is understood, have also been warned that their place in the squad could be jeopardised if they skip training.
Last week BCB director Arnold Manders warned those under contract not to be lured into a false belief that they had become "indispensable".
"The players are on contract but if they continually fail to meet the obligations of their contract then there is a chance they can be removed from the programme and someone else drafted in. This is basically like a job and they have already been told nothing is cast in stone and that nobody is indispensable."
It was late last year that Bascome Sr. was disciplined by the Board after he smashed the stumps after being dismissed during an August 24 Premier Division match involving his club St. George's and nearby rivals St. David's at Wellington Oval.
However, the Board were heavily criticised for merely reprimanding the player for what was deemed a Level Two offence – bringing the game into disrepute.
Ex-Bermuda wicketkeeper-batsman Dennis Wainwright was one of those who considered the punishment too lenient.
"Anywhere else in the world a case such as this would've been dealt with more severely," he argued. "When players misbehave themselves we have to deal with them and I am surprised Herbie would resort to something like this at this stage of his career."
It still remains unclear whether Bascome holds down the post of assistant coach as the BCB experimented with both Clay Smith and Clevie Smith in that role during 2007.
