Decision due soon on Sports Centre
Government should have decided by the end of the month what further developments will take place at the National Sports Centre.
Chairman of the trustees Donald Lines is scheduled to meet Cabinet on May 28 to discuss the future of the Frog Lane project on which work has been suspended pending financial decisions.
"I have a meeting with Cabinet to talk about where we are and where we are going ... after that I hope things will be clear and we will go ahead.
"There's been a hold-up while Government decides what, if anything, they can afford. We haven't really resolved all of that. Certainly the minister's view - as expressed to us in meetings some months ago - was that he would like to finish the western field - that's the astroturf - and the pavilion.
"At the moment we haven't put out tenders because we are awaiting clearance on the financing," said Lines yesterday.
Speaking recently, Sports Minister Randy Horton was optimistic work would soon begin on the much-awaited astroturf.
"The other thing is the completion of the grandstand. They (the trustees) will be going to tender again for that as well. There have been some challenges in regard to that but, hopefully, this time around we will get proper tenders and we will be able to move forward," said the Minister.
Lines explained that while the grandstand itself was finished, it was the access to it - "paving and roadways and things like that" - which needed to be done.
"They are all inter-related with the placing of the artificial turf field. The extent to which we work on that will affect the way in which we approach the question of access to the grandstand. Ultimately the grandstand entrance will be from Roberts Avenue and not from Frog Lane," said the chairman.
He noted there were also plans for parking on the western end of the complex but, once again, it was a matter of financing.
