LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
A stark reminder
October 16, 2008
Dear Sir
Bob Richards' response to Paula Cox in today's Royal Gazette under the heading "Unprecedented challenges" is certainly a stark reminder that Government's current economic policy is wrong, but who's listening? And how absurd that in the same edition, we have the US Consulate, not the Premier, telling the island we are in recession.
Recent newspaper articles would suggest that there are several UBP politicians and independent business men who at least give the impression they have an understanding of the current financial problems and how Bermuda can deal with them. But the PLP give no comfort level at all. Their remarks (or lack there of) give the impression they don't have a clue and are totally incompetent.
The Government has its priorities backwards. They seem more interested spending millions of our dollars to satisfy their own egos at Port Royal and with the PGA than building affordable housing and paying off Police backpay. The general public will never know how tourism really benefited from extravagant music festivals and golf tournaments. They will be constantly reminded of the realities of homeless families and a dysfunctional police force.
WHO'S KIDDING WHO
Warwick
Very inconsiderate
October 19, 2008
Dear Sir,
I'd like to thank the owners and managers of the newly opened Indigo Night Club in Flatts for playing loud and obnoxious music until 2.30-3 a.m. this past Saturday.
These inconsiderate jerks had the speakers on so loud that even with all the doors and windows closed the sound was clearly audible. They gave no consideration for the residents in the surrounding homes rather they kept the same boring drone of music going into the night.
I share this feeling not because I don't like a good night out or good music but rather these revellers have no common sense for their neighbours or noise ordinances. Since I live across the street from Indigo and utilise their services, it is my decision to boycott this establishment and to warn others to do the same. Further, I plan to contact the city planners about this situation and will call the police to report loud noises whether they be from music or from their obnoxious DJ. Very inconsiderate and very low rent.

Connecting the dots
October 20, 2008
Dear Sir,
I sit sometimes listening to voices on the radio; I hear certain familiar voices, in particular, a gentleman who has extensive knowledge of the taxi industry and the Customs Department, among other things. I also hear a lady who is constantly blowing her own horn and she, together with the gentleman, have both made it public that they are strong supporters of the Honourable Premier Dr. Ewart Brown. The gentleman, with his extensive knowledge, offers advice to a taxi driver who is not pleased that he has been unfairly treated for having an alleged disability.
I then read in the weekend newspaper that in accordance with section 18(2) of the Constitution, the Collector of Customs, Winifred Fostine-DeSilva is continuing her acting appointment as Deputy Governor until today. I also read in the daily newspaper that the Governor consults the Premier on matters regarding Heads of Department and Permanent Secretaries and I might add that, as we all know, the Collector of Customs is a department head.
The Royal Gazette today reports that according to Labour and Home Affairs Minister David Burch, the relationship between Government and Government House is "probably the best it's ever been in our history". I also read "What kind of message" written by Allison G.M. Woolgar of Devon, England in the Letters to the Editor today. It appears to me that the Collector of Customs should be concentrating more on ensuring that her staff gives a better first impression of this island. How can one take care of another's business when one is obviously failing to take care of one's own?
The Honourable Premier/Minister of Tourism should be equally concerned. It would be interesting to hear what those two Brown supporters would have to say about this. The more dots I connect, the clearer the picture becomes.
