Bragging rights at stake for Smith brothers
Sunday’s Logic Premier Division match between defending champions St David’s and Cleveland County at Wellington Oval will pit brothers Wendell and Clay Smith against other.
Wendell, the elder of the siblings, is coach of St David’s while Clay is coach of Cleveland, who are playing their first league game of the season after receiving a bye in the first round.
The Islanders will be looking to continue their winning ways after disposing of Somerset in their league opener at Lord’s, while Cleveland will be playing their first match of the season under new coach Clay Smith, who has done his homework on his brother’s team and devised a game plan.
“The toss is important, but regardless we must unsettle them and let them know they are in a battle,” he said.
The Islanders have got their season off to a flyer after putting an end to their Belco Cup jinx.
“St David’s have had things all their own way so far.” Smith added. “I have watched St David’s a few times this season and, having coached them previously, I know their team’s strengths and weaknesses inside out.”
Smith returned to Cleveland for a second coaching stint this month after Allan Douglas, the former national coach, was asked to resign.
Douglas, the Bermuda Cricket Board vice-president, has vowed to continue assisting his beloved club in other capacities.
Smith is pumped up for Sunday’s match against St David’s.
“Some will want to look at it Wendell versus Clay, but it is St David’s against Cleveland,” Smith said.
“Wendell and I are both tacticians, but the game is played on the field. The players will decide the outcome.”
Smith said that his team can expect a tough day at the office against St David’s.
“It does not get any tougher playing the defending champions first who at this moment are in red hot-form,” he said. “But I am a believer that if you work hard and stick to a game plan, anything is possible.”
Smith has received a positive response from his players since rejoining Cleveland.
“I even had an extra session for my two spinners, who I feel have an important part to play in our success,” he said. “I will probably be doing some more individual work on Saturday just to give our team some fine-tuning.”
Sunday’s match will be a dress rehearsal for the first round of this year’s Eastern Counties. St David’s are the cup-holders.
“This will be a good measuring stick for me as I will be observing my players to see how they handle pressure,” Smith said.
Sunday’s remaining Premier matches will have Bailey’s Bay hosting Southampton Rangers at Sea Breeze Oval and Somerset facing Willow Cuts in a west-end derby at Somerset Cricket Club. St George’s have a bye.
In First Division action, Somerset Bridge face Western Counties rivals PHC at White Hill Field, while Western Stars take on Devonshire Rec at St John’s Field. Flatts have a bye, while Warwick will play Bermuda Under-17 tomorrow.
