It's do or die for Rangers
Derrick Brangman and Shannon Rayner are confident their respective sides, Devonshire Rec. and Southampton Rangers, have what it takes to earn victories this weekend and win battles at either end of the table.
A win for Rangers over second place Bailey's Bay at Southampton Oval will see them crowned champions of the 50-over Premier Division, while a win for Devonshire over Willow Cuts at Somerset Cricket Club will see them all but guarantee their top flight status.
For Rangers, last week was a reality check when they slipped up against PHC, despite being in a position of total dominance, and on the verge of taking the title.
That defeat has put the league in the balance with the match against Bay now a title decider.
A win for Rangers would make their last game against St. David's irrelevant, while a Bay victory will see them go one point above Rangers with their last match against Somerset a game they cannot afford to lose.
Rayner doesn't want it to go to the last day, with the middle order batsman insisting that it is do or die time for the club, and with Bay's star batsman Stephen Outerbridge out with a knee injury, now is as good a time as any to win back their coveted crown.
"We look at the game as a must win because last week's game was an eye opener, we have trained hard and prepared as well as we can in preparations for the match," said Rayner.
"We haven't won the league in few years and are looking to bring it back home. We aren't taking them for granted right now, we are taking this as a job and we are bringing our 'A' game per say.
"If we blow them out we do, but the win is the main thing to win the league. It doesn't matter if we have beat them before, we need the win tomorrow.
"It has been a long time since we have won the league and if we can do it then it will be a huge relief. It is a big game for us, we have been the bridesmaids previously and this will be a do-or-die situation."
For Devonshire, life has been better since yesterday's decision handed down by the Bermuda Cricket Board stating that only one team will be going down this year.
As the table stands now, they are safe, but just barely with Somerset level on points with them, and tomorrow's opponents two points back with one match remaining.
Skipper Brangman, who will have to play a pivotal role if his side are to get the win, believes his side will be buoyed by the BCB announcement and will look to wrap up their top-flight status for next year in Somerset.
Should the side lose, however, they will face off against PHC on the final day, while Willow Cuts will have completed their schedule.
"The decision is a crucial one as there are only two games left and there are still teams trying to get away from the relegation spots, well spot now," said Brangman. "I feel good about the scenario we are in now with this news and we will go into the match knowing a win will see us stay up. Our destiny is in our own hands and we are looking to thrash Cuts to guarantee our survival.
"If we win we are up and that will be our mindset, we aren't looking to go into the final game against PHC looking for a win, we want to get it this week and not have to worry about anything else on the final day.
"If we do lose, we will have to buckle down and get on with the task at hand which would be PHC and from the last game we played against them, anything is possible.
"Regardless of the situation, we know what we need to do and will look to confirm our place in the Premier Division next term."
The day's other Premier Division clash sees PHC welcome Somerset to White Hill Field.
